A point charge +q is placed at the origin and another point charge +4q is placed at (d, 0, 0). At which point along the x-axis does the net electric field vanish?
A
(d/2, 0, 0)
B
(2d/3, 0, 0)
C
(d/3, 0, 0)
D
(d/4, 0, 0)
Answer: (C) (d/3, 0, 0)
At point x between the charges, E due to +q points right and E due to +4q points left. Setting them equal: kq/x² = k(4q)/(d-x)². Solving: (d-x)/x = 2, so x = d/3. The field from the smaller charge balances the larger one at 1/3 of the distance — closer to the smaller charge.
